Natural Gas Transport, Storage, Trading and Distribution

Identifies companies and other entities that own or operate dedicated infrastructure or commercial businesses for transmitting, transporting, storing, shipping, trading, or distributing natural gas or liquefied natural gas. Qualifying activities include transmission pipelines, distribution networks, LNG carriers and terminals where the role is transport or regasification, storage facilities, and principal gas trading. Upstream production, liquefaction, power generation, generic freight, equipment supply, and end-use consumption are excluded.

How to read this definition

Inclusion criteria describe evidence that can establish this activity. Exclusion criteria identify circumstances that do not establish it on that basis alone. The evaluation remains connected to its taxonomy version and supporting evidence.

Can establish this activity

Included when supported

Evidence may support involvement when it matches one or more of these inclusion criteria.

8 criteria
  1. 01Criterion

Include owners or operators of natural-gas transmission or gathering pipelines where the activity is not limited to an upstream field’s internal facilities.

  2. 02Criterion

Include regulated or commercial natural-gas distribution utilities and local distribution networks.

  3. 03Criterion

Include owners or operators of LNG carriers and dedicated gas-shipping businesses that directly transport liquefied natural gas.

  4. 04Criterion

Include owners or operators of underground, above-ground, or LNG natural-gas storage facilities and regasification terminals where the role is storage or delivery rather than liquefaction.

  5. 05Criterion

Include integrated midstream gas businesses with direct ownership or operation of qualifying transport, storage, terminal, distribution, or trading activities.

  6. 06Criterion

Include operators of regional, national, or cross-border gas networks.

  7. 07Criterion

Include companies whose principal or documented commercial activity is trading natural gas or LNG as principal or title holder.

  8. 08Criterion

Include companies operating consumer or industrial gas-distribution services; ordinary end-use supply without network or trading responsibility is excluded.

Does not establish this activity on its own

Excluded on this basis alone

These circumstances do not establish this activity unless separate evidence also meets an inclusion criterion.

6 criteria

Natural Gas Exploration and Extraction Companies Without Transport Operations

Defined as: Upstream producers engaged solely in gas exploration or production activities.

  2. 02Criterion

Natural Gas Processing or Liquefaction Companies Without Distribution Infrastructure

Defined as: Entities converting or processing gas without operating transportation or delivery systems.

  3. 03Criterion

    Natural Gas-Fired Power Generation Companies

Defined as: Utilities or power producers consuming natural gas for electricity generation without gas transport or distribution activities.

  4. 04Criterion

Exclude general shipping, ports, freight, and logistics businesses without a dedicated or documented natural-gas or LNG transport role.

  5. 05Criterion

Exclude engineering, construction, equipment, maintenance, inspection, and digital-service providers without ownership or operation of the qualifying infrastructure or commodity business.

  6. 06Criterion

    Industrial Consumers of Natural Gas

Defined as: Manufacturers, utilities, or commercial facilities purchasing gas for internal use rather than distributing or transporting it commercially.
