Natural Gas Reserves

Identifies companies and other entities that own or control economically recognized reserves or resources of natural gas through direct ownership or extractive rights. Reserve class, development status, conventional or unconventional type, associated-gas status, geography, and ownership basis must be recorded. LNG inventories are not reserves. Transport, processing, power generation, service provision, passive financial exposure, mere exploration without an established economic resource, and fully divested assets are excluded.

How to read this definition

Inclusion criteria describe evidence that can establish this activity. Exclusion criteria identify circumstances that do not establish it on that basis alone. The evaluation remains connected to its taxonomy version and supporting evidence.

Can establish this activity

Included when supported

Evidence may support involvement when it matches one or more of these inclusion criteria.

9 criteria
  1. 01Criterion

Include companies owning or controlling natural-gas reserves or resources recognized under an applicable technical or securities-reporting standard.

  2. 02Criterion

Include holders of gas exploration, production, mineral, lease, concession, or comparable extractive rights that confer substantive rights to an identified resource.

  3. 03Criterion

Include undeveloped natural-gas assets where the entity retains a recognized economic resource interest; record development status separately.

  4. 04Criterion

Include conventional natural-gas reserves and resources, with resource type recorded.

  5. 05Criterion

Include shale gas, tight gas, coalbed methane, and other unconventional gas reserves or resources, with geology and extraction technique recorded separately.

  6. 06Criterion

Include diversified or integrated energy companies with documented natural-gas reserve or resource holdings.

  7. 07Criterion

Include upstream gas reserves contracted to support an LNG project only where the evaluated entity owns or controls the underlying resource right; LNG inventory or capacity alone is not a reserve.

  8. 08Criterion

Include exploration companies only after an identified gas resource or reserve has been established under a recognized reporting basis and the entity holds the relevant rights.

  9. 09Criterion

Include acquisitions or investments that transfer direct ownership or control of a natural-gas reserve, resource, or extractive right to the evaluated entity.

Does not establish this activity on its own

Excluded on this basis alone

These circumstances do not establish this activity unless separate evidence also meets an inclusion criterion.

7 criteria
  1. 01Criterion

Exclude transporters, distributors, storage operators, traders, and LNG shippers without direct upstream reserve or extractive-right ownership.

  2. 02Criterion

Exclude processors and liquefaction operators without direct upstream reserve or extractive-right ownership.

  3. 03Criterion

Oil Reserve Ownership Without Material Natural Gas Reserves

Defined as: Companies holding crude oil reserves without commercially significant natural gas reserve ownership.

  4. 04Criterion

    Gas-Fired Power Generation Companies

Defined as: Utilities or power producers consuming natural gas without reserve ownership or extraction rights.

  5. 05Criterion

Exclude service providers, contractors, equipment suppliers, and financiers without direct resource ownership.

  6. 06Criterion

Exclude assets fully divested, surrendered, expired, abandoned, or written off with no continuing economic right, while preserving historical involvement separately.

  7. 07Criterion

Exclude prospects, leads, exploration targets, or discoveries that do not meet a recognized economic resource or reserve classification.
