Natural Gas Exploration and Extraction

Identifies companies and other entities that own or operate upstream activities to discover, develop, or produce natural gas, including conventional gas, shale gas, tight gas, coalbed methane, and associated gas from onshore or offshore fields. Processing, liquefaction, transport, distribution, power generation, and oilfield services without an upstream ownership or operator role are excluded. Hydraulic fracturing, deepwater, Arctic, and other high-impact characteristics are separately recorded where evidenced.

How to read this definition

Inclusion criteria describe evidence that can establish this activity. Exclusion criteria identify circumstances that do not establish it on that basis alone. The evaluation remains connected to its taxonomy version and supporting evidence.

Can establish this activity

Included when supported

Evidence may support involvement when it matches one or more of these inclusion criteria.

8 criteria
  1. 01Criterion

Operators of Natural Gas Production Fields

Defined as: Companies managing onshore or offshore gas fields producing natural gas for commercial sale or industrial use.

  2. 02Criterion

Companies Conducting Natural Gas Exploration Activities

Defined as: Entities performing seismic analysis, geological surveying, exploratory drilling, or reserve appraisal for natural gas development.

  3. 03Criterion

Owners of Natural Gas Extraction Rights or Licenses

Defined as: Firms holding leases, concessions, production-sharing agreements, or mineral rights related to natural gas extraction.

  4. 04Criterion

    Companies Extracting Conventional Natural Gas

Defined as: Entities producing gas from conventional underground reservoirs using traditional drilling methods.

  5. 05Criterion

    Companies Extracting Unconventional Natural Gas

Defined as: Firms producing shale gas, tight gas, coalbed methane, or other unconventional natural gas resources.

  6. 06Criterion

Integrated Energy Companies With Upstream Gas Operations

Defined as: Diversified oil and gas companies reporting natural gas exploration or production activities within their upstream portfolio.

  7. 07Criterion

Developers of New Natural Gas Production Projects

Defined as: Companies involved in planning, financing, permitting, or constructing natural gas extraction projects.

  8. 08Criterion

    Offshore Natural Gas Production Operators

Defined as: Entities operating offshore drilling platforms or subsea infrastructure dedicated to natural gas extraction.

Does not establish this activity on its own

Excluded on this basis alone

These circumstances do not establish this activity unless separate evidence also meets an inclusion criterion.

6 criteria
  1. 01Criterion

Natural Gas Processing, Liquefaction, or Storage Without Extraction Activity

Defined as: Midstream companies handling gas after extraction without participating in upstream production.

  2. 02Criterion

Gas Pipeline, Transmission, or Distribution Companies

Defined as: Entities transporting or distributing natural gas without ownership or operation of extraction assets.

  3. 03Criterion

    Natural Gas-Fired Power Generation Companies

Defined as: Utilities or power producers consuming natural gas for electricity generation without upstream gas production activities.

  4. 04Criterion

Oilfield Service Providers Without Production Ownership

Defined as: Contractors providing drilling, seismic, engineering, or well services without ownership or operational control of gas reserves or production assets.

  5. 05Criterion

Companies Producing Only Crude Oil Without Natural Gas Production

Defined as: Firms engaged solely in oil extraction activities without material natural gas operations.

  6. 06Criterion

Companies With Fully Decommissioned or Divested Gas Assets

Defined as: Entities that have permanently ceased natural gas exploration or extraction activities.
