Inclusion criteria describe evidence that can establish this activity. Exclusion criteria identify circumstances that do not establish it on that basis alone. The evaluation remains connected to its taxonomy version and supporting evidence.
Included when supported
Evidence may support involvement when it matches one or more of these inclusion criteria.
- 01Criterion
Include owners or operators of commercial terrestrial livestock or poultry facilities using intensive indoor or confined production systems.
- 02Criterion
Include operations using gestation or farrowing crates, battery cages, veal crates, tethering, feedlots, or other systems that materially restrict normal movement, with the specific practice recorded.
- 03Criterion
Include operations using routine physical alterations, mutilations, depopulation practices, or other husbandry practices of concern; record procedure, species, pain mitigation, and legal status as evidence attributes.
- 04Criterion
Include large-scale poultry, pig, cattle, dairy, egg, or other terrestrial-animal operations using continuous or predominant high-density confinement.
- 05Criterion
Include integrated meat, dairy, egg, and food companies only where they own, control, or directly operate the qualifying farming system; purchasing alone is handled through client-policy attribution rules.
- 06Criterion
Include operations supported by reliable regulatory, court, audit, certification, or investigation evidence of systemic intensive-confinement or husbandry practices, provided the entity and facility are resolved.
Excluded on this basis alone
These circumstances do not establish this activity unless separate evidence also meets an inclusion criterion.
- 01Criterion
Exclude operations documented as pasture-based, free-range, extensive, or otherwise non-intensive under the selected factual indicators; certification alone is supporting evidence rather than automatic exclusion.
- 02Criterion
Exclude small-scale or traditional farms only where the available evidence establishes that they do not use the qualifying intensive systems or practices; size alone is not determinative.
- 03Criterion
Exclude slaughterhouses, meatpackers, dairy processors, egg processors, food manufacturers, and retailers that do not own, control, or operate the farming activity.
- 04Criterion
Do not exclude solely because an operation holds an animal-welfare certification; use the certification as evidence and evaluate the actual production system and practices.
- 05Criterion
Exclude veterinary, feed, genetics, housing, equipment, technology, finance, and other suppliers without ownership, control, or operation of the farming activity.
- 06Criterion
Exclude aquaculture and seafood farming from this terrestrial factory-farming screen unless a future approved screen expressly covers aquatic production systems.
