Evaluated screen

Oil Sands and Tar Sands

Identifies companies and other entities that own or operate upstream extraction or dedicated upgrading of bitumen from oil-sands or tar-sands deposits, including surface mining and in-situ recovery. Pipelines, transporters, refiners, and traders are included only where they separately own or operate qualifying extraction or upgrading activity; handling oil-sands-derived feedstock alone is recorded under the applicable core oil screen with a feedstock attribute. Generic services and ceased or divested activities are excluded.

How to read this definition

Inclusion criteria describe evidence that can establish this activity. Exclusion criteria identify circumstances that do not establish it on that basis alone. The evaluation remains connected to its taxonomy version and supporting evidence.

Can establish this activity

Included when supported

Evidence may support involvement when it matches one or more of these inclusion criteria.

6 criteria
  1. 01Criterion

Include operators of commercial oil-sands or tar-sands extraction using surface mining or in-situ recovery.

  2. 02Criterion

Include entities owning or controlling oil-sands or bitumen extraction rights, leases, reserves, or operating interests.

  3. 03Criterion

Include owners or operators of dedicated bitumen upgrading facilities that convert extracted bitumen into synthetic crude or comparable upstream products.

  4. 04Criterion

Exclude pipelines, rail, terminals, tankers, and other transport activities solely because they handle oil-sands-derived crude; classify the transport role under the applicable core oil screen and record feedstock exposure separately.

  5. 05Criterion

Exclude refineries solely because they process oil-sands-derived feedstock; classify refining under Oil Refining and Upgrading unless the entity also owns or operates qualifying extraction or dedicated upstream upgrading.

  6. 06Criterion

Include diversified or integrated energy companies with directly evidenced current oil-sands extraction, reserve ownership, or dedicated upgrading.

Does not establish this activity on its own

Excluded on this basis alone

These circumstances do not establish this activity unless separate evidence also meets an inclusion criterion.

6 criteria
  1. 01Criterion

Exclude conventional, shale, tight, or other oil production without a qualifying oil-sands or tar-sands asset.

  2. 02Criterion

Exclude general refining or upgrading where a direct oil-sands role is not established.

  3. 03Criterion

Exclude oilfield service, equipment, engineering, and construction providers without ownership or operation of the qualifying extraction or dedicated upgrading activity.

  4. 04Criterion

Exclude general pipeline, rail, storage, shipping, and trading companies without a separate qualifying upstream oil-sands role.

  5. 05Criterion

Exclude non-hydrocarbon mining, renewable energy, remediation, and reclamation activity without current oil-sands extraction or upgrading.

  6. 06Criterion

Exclude ceased or divested oil-sands activity from current involvement while preserving verified historical involvement and effective dates.
