Arctic Oil and Gas Exploration and Extraction

Identifies companies and other entities that own or operate commercial oil or gas exploration, drilling, development, or production within a defined Arctic boundary. The evidence must identify the asset or project, geographic location, operator or ownership role, and activity status. The applicable Arctic boundary is stored as a jurisdictional or client-policy attribute. General services, midstream or downstream activity without Arctic upstream involvement, scientific research, non-hydrocarbon projects, passive financial exposure, and fully abandoned assets are excluded.

How to read this definition

Inclusion criteria describe evidence that can establish this activity. Exclusion criteria identify circumstances that do not establish it on that basis alone. The evaluation remains connected to its taxonomy version and supporting evidence.

Can establish this activity

Included when supported

Evidence may support involvement when it matches one or more of these inclusion criteria.

6 criteria
  1. 01Criterion

Include operators of commercial Arctic oil or gas fields within the selected geographic boundary.

  2. 02Criterion

Include holders of active Arctic oil or gas exploration, drilling, development, or production licences or rights where the entity’s substantive interest is documented.

  3. 03Criterion

Include entities directly conducting Arctic upstream drilling.

  4. 04Criterion

Include developers of active or committed Arctic upstream oil or gas projects, with project status and final-investment-decision evidence recorded.

  5. 05Criterion

Include owners or operators of Arctic wellheads, production facilities, and field infrastructure directly forming part of an upstream oil or gas project.

  6. 06Criterion

Include diversified or integrated energy companies with directly evidenced current Arctic upstream operations.

Does not establish this activity on its own

Excluded on this basis alone

These circumstances do not establish this activity unless separate evidence also meets an inclusion criterion.

6 criteria
  1. 01Criterion

Exclude contractors and service providers without direct resource ownership or operator responsibility; assess qualifying specialized services under Arctic Drilling Infrastructure and Services.

  2. 02Criterion

Exclude refining, transport, storage, trading, distribution, and other midstream or downstream activity without a separate Arctic upstream role.

  3. 03Criterion

Exclude scientific, environmental, geological, and public-sector research activity that does not constitute commercial hydrocarbon exploration or extraction.

  4. 04Criterion

Exclude fully decommissioned, surrendered, expired, or abandoned Arctic assets from current involvement while preserving verified historical involvement.

  5. 05Criterion

Exclude Arctic renewable-energy, mining, shipping, telecommunications, and other non-hydrocarbon infrastructure.

  6. 06Criterion

Exclude lending, underwriting, securities ownership, insurance, and other financial exposure that does not confer direct upstream ownership or operator responsibility.
